Madawaska closes 3 ATV trails while farmer plants crops

MADAWASKA, Maine — The Madawaska Select Board voted to close three ATV trails this year while a local farmer plants seed potatoes in town. The closure, according to the board, will only take place this year.

A letter sent to Town Manager David Daigle from Madawaska ATV Club Vice President and Trail Master Real Deschaine stated that the club was recently contacted by the landowner about closing these trails due to concerns about the crops coming into contact with diseases from other areas.

The closure would shut down trails near Lavertu Road and Lake Shore Road.

The ATV club has also requested access to Little Mountain Road, part of Golf Course Road, and also on a portion of Bealieau Road from Fire Station #2 to Lake Shore Road.

Select Board member Jenney Dionne asked if this would be the only thing changing, which Chairman Jason Boucher confirmed.

Daigle added that this would be temporary, only lasting for the current year.

Following a brief discussion, the board voted in favor of the trail closure.
