FORT KENT, Maine – A fire on Friday morning destroyed a Fort Kent garage that had been used as a trucking repair shop, along with several vehicles inside it, according to the Fort Kent Fire and Rescue Department.

The department responded to the fire at 4:30 a.m., at which point the structure was heavily burning and beginning to collapse, it announced on Facebook. About two dozen firefighters from Fort Kent, Eagle Lake and Frenchville spent four hours extinguishing the blaze.

The garage, according to the post, was owned by Billy Caron.

“Inside was a truck and self loader, a snowmobile and a tractor,” the department said. “All contents were a total loss.”

Firefighters were assisted by the Maine Department of Transportation, the Fort Kent Public Works Department, Ambulance Service, Inc. and a private crane contractor.

According to the post, the Maine fire marshal’s office is investigating the blaze, but the initial evidence suggests that it was likely caused by lithium ion batteries.
