Patrick E. Mahany
MAHANY, Patrick E., 88, EASTON, July 24, 2014.
EASTON – Patrick E. Mahany died on July 24, just shy of his 89th year. Born in Easton on August 6, 1925, ‘Pat’ was the third son of Eldon and Delia (Long) Mahany. He grew up on a farm in the beautiful River de Chute area of Easton along the Canadian border, hardly more than a stone’s throw from where his great-grandparents, Cain Mahany, Irish immigrant and Civil War veteran, and Mary Ann Fallon, settled in the mid-1850s.
Pat was an energetic guy and a very hard worker. He was a loving and dedicated husband, a great dad and granddad, a good friend, a dear cousin, and an active citizen.
Pat attended the one-room Mahany School for eight years, then Easton High School, from which he graduated with honors in 1943. He served in the U.S. Army in Europe during WW II, received the Purple Heart and other medals for his service and remained strongly dedicated to his country throughout his life.
Pat was an avid skier. Learning on the hills of River de Chute, he graduated as an adult to the mountains of Colorado, Maine, Vermont, and Canada. He also was a lifelong horseman. As a boy, he was used to working with horses on the farm. He enjoyed riding horses, was a member of the Belle Hollow Hunt Club, and raised and owned several successful racehorses.
Pat married Phyllis Millard of Fort Fairfield in 1947 and, the same year, moved to Arkport, New York, where he established a potato and grain farm. Along with his sons, he operated the farm until his ‘retirement’ in 1981. Since 1983, he had spent his winters in Florida, and, since 1996, he had been engaged summers in the day to day operation of Sun Valley Campsites in Arkport.
Pat was predeceased by his wife Phyllis in 2002; his son, Timothy in 2014; his grandson, Anthony in 1999; and his brothers, Vincent and Joseph.
He is survived by three sons, Patrick (Karen) Mahany, Jr. of Colorado, Sean (Nancy) Mahany of Arizona, and Kevin (Christine) Mahany of Arkport; and by his daughter, Michelle (Alan) Eddison of Florida. He is also survived by two sisters, Gertrude Thompson of Seattle, WA, and Sr. Joyce Mahany of Standish, ME; his brother, Murray (Reba) Mahany of Arkport, NY; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Pat will be fondly remembered by an old friend and relative, Floyd Flewelling, of Easton and by surviving cousins he grew up with in River de Chute.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Monday, July 28, at 10 a.m., at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Hornell, NY, with Father John Cullen officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Hornell, with full military honors. Those who wish may make memorial contributions in his name to the Arkport American Legion, West Ave., Arkport, New York 14807.
