Manganese is one of these strategics. It is used as a scavenging agent to remove impurities in making common steel. About 14 pounds of manganese are required for this purpose for each ton of steel manufactured. Manganese is also an element used in the manufacture of alloy steel. When combined in proportion with iron and carbon in steel, it produces a tough abrasion-resisting metal. Wear plates on tractor blades is an example of the use of manganese iron.
