
99 Years Ago – October 29, 1925
Justice Dunn named Gordon receivers — Justice Charles J. Dunn of the supreme judicial court appointed Honorary P. H. Gillen of Bangor, a prominent attorney at law of this state, and County Attorney Artemus Weatherbee of Lincoln as receivers of Frank H. Gordon Incorporated, proprietor of silver black fox ranches and conducting fox ranching business at various ranches in Maine and elsewhere. The action of appointing receivers was taken upon the petition of Frank H. Gordon individually in order that the affairs of the corporation may be examined and the exact status determined. In his petition, Dr. Gordon declared that the corporation was not insolvent. Mr. Gillen and Mr. Weatherbee qualified during the afternoon as receivers by filling a bond in the sum of $20,000 for the faithful performance of their duties.
50 Years Ago – October 30, 1974
Half century of service — Dr. Heber B. Kierstead of Presque Isle was feted at a special gathering at the Masonic Hall Tuesday evening, Oct. 22. During the evening, a special resolution of recognition was awarded to the retired dentist from the board of directors of the Presque Isle Area Chamber of Commerce. The resolution cited Dr. Kierstead’s more than 50 years of dentistry in Presque Isle and commended him for his work in a free clinic for children from poor families. City Manager, Dana F. Connors who was also vice president of government affairs for the chamber, presented the recognition plaque to the doctor.
The US Navy posted a new recruiter in Aroostook — Chief Petty Officer Eugene R. Hamm, USN, reported Monday, Oct. 7, as the Navy Recruiter in Aroostook County. Chief Hamm enlisted in the Navy at Menominee, Michigan, in Sept. 1958. He was a veteran of 16 years in aircraft maintenance and support equipment. A graduate of the Navy’s ADCOP Program, Chief Hamm received an associate degree from Pensacola Junior College, Pensacola, Florida. He had reported here from a three-year tour of duty at Naval Station, Adak, Alaska. Chief Hamm’s wife, the former Fay O’Leary, and their daughters, Sherry and Sandra, accompanied him to Presque Isle.
Augusta Christie honored by BPWs — The Presque Isle Business and Professional Women’s Club held a dinner Tuesday evening, Oct. 22, at the Northeastland Hotel in Presque Isle to honor one of the Star City’s outstanding women, Mrs. Augusta K. Christie. A committee headed by Bea Chase introduced a number of local dignitaries and read congratulatory telegrams all noting the many civic and business successes of Mrs. Christie. Christie served Presque Isle and surrounding Aroostook County towns as a teacher, business woman, international leader in the WCTU, as well as six terms in the state legislature. The banquet was planned as a surprise for Mrs. Christie and she accepted the honors and many congratulations with her usual good grace and humor.
25 Years Ago – November 3, 1999
Dudley received a letter of commendation — Alan Dudley, district game warden, was presented with a letter of commendation for his heroic actions on Sept. 11, 1999. Dudley went into the Presque Isle Stream without hesitation after Arthur Lamoreau of Presque Isle accidentally rolled his truck backwards into the water. Dudley swam to the submerged vehicle and dove under the water until he reached Lamoreau and pulled him out of the truck to safety. Sgt. Bill Campbell, Chief Naldo Gagnon of the Presque Isle Police Department and Lt. Mike Marshall of the Maine Warden Service presented Dudley with the award.
Kimball was appointed interim vice presidency at UMPI — Dr. Richard Kimball was named the interim vice president of academic affairs at the University of Maine at Presque Isle. Kimball, who had been a mathematics professor for more than 25 years, stepped into the vice president’s role once before when the university was in a transition period. He had also been director of educational technology when the university received a major grant through the Title III program that brought $1 million worth of technology to the campus.Belt promotions — Students at the Quest Center in Presque Isle who received belt promotions were Bradley Dillon and Mark Dillon, both of Fort Fairfield; Joey Hedrich, Anik Nadeau, Daniel Jackson, Dave Johnson, Lynne Raymond Hedrich, John Williams, Devon Charette and Matt Grandy, all of Presque Isle; Brian Dickinson, Rick Wing and Ed Bishop, all of Caribou; and Francis Lawrence of Perth-Andover, New Brunswick.
