    PRESQUE ISLE & MAPLETON – Gertrude H. Oakes, 97, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2014, with her family by her side. She was born in Chapman, February 5, 1917, the daughter of Harry and Lizzy (Grendell) Hudson.
    Gertrude worked for many companies throughout her life including Converse, Potato Service, McCains, and even worked as a Cook at Lumber Camps for several seasons. She was a very hard worker, who loved time with her family. She loved large family gatherings, cooking, quilting, and picking wild berries. She was famous for her donut cooking, which no one could replicate.
    Gertrude is survived by her daughter, Alice and her life partner, Butch Johnson of Castle Hill; her sister, Pearl Williams of Mapleton; her grandchildren and their spouses, Sheldon and Heather Keiser of Presque Isle, Corey and Jennifer Keiser of Presque Isle, and Reggie and Dani Keiser of Holland, TX; her great-grandchildren, Tyler, Spencer, Landon, Abby, Houston, and Josh Keiser, and Dawson Beaulieu; her great-great-grandchild, Charlie Keiser; her special nieces, Sherry Thibodeau and Lynda Kurilec; and good friends, Gordy and Alice Keiser, and Sandra Hunter. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews.
    In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her first husband of 57 years, Ruel Hughes; her second husband, Glenn Oakes; her siblings, Eva Skidgell, Stella Chase, John Hudson, Hank Hudson, and Bud Hudson; a nephew, Danny Belyea; and her son-in-law, Robert Littlefield.
    Friends and family called from 12-1 p.m., on Saturday, July 19, at Mapleton Methodist Church, where a Celebration of Life was held at 1 p.m., Rev. Dot Mattson officiating. A reception was held at the church following services. Interment was held at Southside Cemetery following the reception. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Mapleton Methodist Church.
