Employees honored during annual recognition event

The University of Maine at Presque Isle honored several employees for their years of service during the annual Employee Recognition Reception held on May 15. Twenty-five employees were recognized for their combined 490 years of service to the university. Employees were honored with various tokens of appreciation, from clocks to framed art.
Honorees include:
• Recognized for 40 years of service were: Charles Holmquist and Eldon Levesque;
• Recognized for 35 years of service were: Anderson Giles and Donna Underwood;
• Recognized for 30 years of service was Virginia Fischer;
• Recognized for 25 years of service were: Barbara Devaney, Clare Exner, Barbara Lambert, Philip Parks and Christopher Smith;
• Recognized for 20 years of service was Nola Belanger;
• Recognized for 15 years of service were: Barbara Blackstone, Barbara Chalou, Mitchell James, Marteen Hester, Deborah Hodgkins, Linda Mastro, Jay Robinson and Greg Shaw;
• Recognized for 10 years of service were: Eric Brissette, Darylen Cote and David Ouellette; and
• Recognized for 5 years of service were: Jannie Durr, Carolyn Dorsey-Durepo and William More.
During the Recognition Reception, officials also honored seven retirees: Laura Bouchard, administrative specialist with TRiO Upward Bound; Barbara Chalou, professor of education; Malcolm Coulter, lecturer in math; Clare Exner, professor of business management; Anderson Giles, professor of art; Linda Graves, professor of medical laboratory technology and program director; and Robert Pinette, professor of biology.
“We owe a great deal of thanks to our dedicated and hard-working faculty and staff, as well as to our retiring employees, who have given many years of service — and in many cases the majority of their careers — to our campus,” UMPI President Linda Schott said. “Our employees work every day to keep our campus running smoothly and efficiently. Due to their efforts, our campus community is stronger and our students well served.”

UMaine Extension publishes bulletin on raising rabbits for meat

    ORONO — Officials with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension have released a bulletin to inform people interested in becoming backyard producers of meat rabbits.
Gary Anderson, a UMaine Extension animal and bio-sciences specialist, authored “Backyard Production of Meat Rabbits in Maine.” Topics in the 15-page bulletin include the Maine environment, breeds and selection, reproduction, health management, predator control, market outlets and promotions, dressing out a rabbit fryer and recipes. The popularity of raising domestic meat rabbits is growing in Maine, Anderson said, adding that benefits include nutritious food at a relatively low cost, potential for extra income and an educational experience for the family.

University of Maine announces dean’s list

    ORONO — The University of Maine recognized 2,130 students for achieving Dean’s List honors in the spring 2014 semester. Of the students who made the Dean’s List, 1,730 are from Maine, 338 are from 30 other states, and 62 are from 24 countries other than the U.S.
To be named to the Dean’s List, students must complete 12 or more credit hours in the semester and earn a grade point average of 3.5 or higher. Students from central Aroostook County being recognized were:
Haley Bouchard and Kelsey Buck, both of Chapman; Ariana Babineau, Sydney Trask and Holden Turner, all of Easton; Nathaniel Devoe, Sarah Holbrook and Kacie York, all of Fort Fairfield; Elizabeth Wright of Mapleton; Dani Wolland of Perham; Casey Carson, Edward Escobar, Richard Flora, Brittany Good, Logan Good, Stephen Goulet, Kyle Goupille, Mary Green, Brandon Howlett, Jenice Jarvis, Kenedy Jarvis, Haley Johnston, Joshua Jones, Sarah Landry, Benjamin Picard, Connor Shaw, Harold Stewart, Jacob Towle, Evan Waddell and Wesley Zeng, all of Presque Isle; Nicholas Silver of Wade; and Marcella Cheviot and Cameron Huston, both of Washburn.

USM releases spring 2014 dean’s lists

     The following full-time, local students have been named to the University of Southern Maine dean’s list for the spring 2014 semester.
In order to be named to the list, students must earn a grade-point average of 3.4 or higher and carry a minimum of 12 credit hours.
Area students making the list include: Meg Michelle Bosse, Fort Fairfield; and Hayden Mitchell Dow, Presque Isle.
