PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — City Council during their June 2 meeting approved a contract with Lane Construction for asphalt paving, per their bid prices, with work to be done on more than a dozen streets in the community.

City Manager Jim Bennett told councilors Lane was the low bidder, coming in within the city’s budget.
“The only thing I want to note is Dana (Fowler, director of public services) and I will have a discussion on paving Dudley Street. We may want to put in a permanent speed table to get rid of the speed bumps. They’ve been highly effective in dealing with speeders but have also moved traffic to other streets. We may have other streets’ residents come in to pursue the same,” said Bennett.
Fowler said Academy Street was out to bid in March but bids came in too high, so work on that street is going out to bid again.
In a memo to Bennett, Fowler explained what work is needing to be done and what the cost will be.
“The total cost of asphalt paving for this contract will be approximately $428,687. The proposed paving list totals 3.78 miles of streets. Asphalt paving is identified in the city’s budget and there is adequate funding,” wrote Fowler.
Fowler noted that “the public works division may make adjustments to the list for financial reasons with the principal reason being to reduce the amount of paving in order to have the public works’ budget in the black for year end.”
He indicated severe winter weather resulted in budget overages for vehicle fuel and overtime.
Work needing to be done includes sidewalks, parking lots and curbing. Streets that will be affected include: Charles, Elm, Pleasant, Central, Dupont, Pine and the loop, Winchester, Yale, Sherwin, Exchange, Dudley, Fleetwood, Spruce and Trombley, as well as Airport Drive and Harvest Lane.
