White earns military awards

    Sgt. 1st Class Derek A. White  was surprised to find out he was the recipient of the Diversity and Leadership Award (Equal Opportunity Advisor).

White is an equal opportunity advisor for headquarters, 17th Fires Brigade at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash., U.S. Army Forces Command and works on equal opportunity issues throughout the command. He was recognized by the Secretary of the Army, during an annual group of awards that are presented in 13 categories. White was nominated by his superiors to Forces Command in North Carolina and then on to All Army Competition Division.
White assists his brigade command with any HR in charge of training of overall readiness for his unit. He also helps establish a good command climate and assists with the Army’s Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention, or SHARP, program. White said he focuses on his mission of helping Soldiers.
“I was very surprised, and humbled and honored to receive this award,” he said. “I’ve been telling everybody back at Joint Base Lewis McChord, I don’t know what I did to receive it,” he said. “I’m taking care of soldiers and ensuring that their needs are met and they have somebody to listen to and help them out if there is a problem.”
His citation says he is actively involved in every aspect of the Equal Opportunity program and has set the standard for planning and executing ethnic and special observances on post, playing a “direct and critical role” in educating soldiers about diversity and equality.
Under-Secretary of the Army Mr. Brad Carson presented the award on behalf at the Secretary of the Army Don McHugh. White resides in Washington with his wife and daughter.  (Information was obtained from www.army.mil.)

West Ridge Golf Course

    Owner Mike Milbury has announced that he will be offering a special at his location on West Ridge Road on Thursday, July 10 through Sunday, July 13. Donations will be accepted to play and all proceeds will go towards college scholarships.

Easton Field Days’ Itinerary

    Monday, July 7 — Basketball Tournament in Easton High School Gym; 4:15 and 5:30 p.m. will be the girls’ games, and 6:45 and 8 p.m. will be the boys’ games.
Concessions will be Country Farms Market; the admission fee is $2.
Tuesday, July 8 — Community Tea starting at 3:30 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall. Please bring your favorite tea cup; come “dressed for tea.” Sponsored by the Easton Girl Scouts.
Basketball Tournament in Easton High School Gym; 4:15 and 5:30 p.m. will be the girls’ games, and 6:45 and 8 p.m. the boys’ games. Concessions will be County Farms Market; The admission fee is $2.
Co-ed Softball Games at 5:45 and 6:45 p.m. on the field near the tennis courts.
Wednesday, July 9 — Field Trip to Yogi Bear Park from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.; bus departs from the Hall. Participants must have a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen, release form and passport or birth certificate.
*New & Improved* G-Force Laser Tag 5:30-9 p.m. in the elementary school gym. The cost is $7 for ages 12 and under (5:30-7 p.m.) and $10 for ages 12 and up (7-9 p.m.). Concessions will be sold.
Thursday, July 10 — Flower Show Set-Up/Drop Off  from 6-8 p.m. at the Easton Elementary School. Flowers will be on display at EES for the remainder of the weekend. Ribbons will be awarded for various categories.

A BOKWA fundraiser will be held from 5:30 -7:30 p.m. in the Easton Elementary School Gym. The cost is $10; proceeds go to EHS Girls’ Soccer Team.
Friday, July 11 — Little School Restoration Open House from 1-4 p.m. on Station Road. Kiwanis Barbecue held 4-6:30 p.m. in the Elementary School Cafeteria.
Cribbage Tournament starts at 7 p.m. in the elementary school cafeteria. There is a $2 donation to play; please bring a board. Concessions sold by Easton Kiwanis.
Movie with a winter theme on the “Big Screen” at 7 p.m. at the Easton Elementary School Gym. Come as your favorite character: Elsa, Anna, Olaf or Kristoff. Prizes will be awarded for best costumes. Ice cream, slushies, etc. will be available.
Saturday, July 12 — Breakfast-on-the-go 7-10 a.m. at Country Farms Market; Assorted breakfast specials.
“Tenth” of a Marathon Race/Walk registration starts at 8 a.m. at the elementary school playground; race begins at 8:30 a.m. The fee is $10, proceeds go to EHS Girls Soccer Team. Prizes awarded to winner of each division.
Parade on Center Road begins at 10 a.m. from Perry Road to the Wesleyan Church. (Center Road closes at 9:45 a.m.)
Craft Show, Exhibits and Amusements begin at 11 a.m. at the school grounds. Children’s area will include: obstacle course, bounce houses, face painting, ballooning, clowns, tractor “train” rides, and musical entertainment with “Tim the Tune Man.”
Little School Open House/Ice Cream Social from noon to 4 p.m. on the Station Road.
20th annual Golf Tournament starting at 1 p.m. West Ridge Golf Course; four-person scramble, $40/team. To register, call 429-9368.
Variety Show at 7 p.m. at the high school gym. Should be a fun-filled evening! If you are interested in performing, please call Valorie at 540-3838 for details. Free admission, donations accepted.
Fireworks Display (Bigger & Better Show by Atlas) at 9:30 p.m. at the school grounds. Concessions will be available.
Sunday, July 13 — Community Gospel Concert at 3 p.m. at the Pentecostal Church, a love offering will be taken. Light refreshments to follow. Everyone is welcome to attend!
Co-ed softball games at 3, 4, 5 and 6 p.m. on the field near tennis courts.
