First Friday Art Walk

Reed Fine Art Gallery presents Scanga exhibit

The University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Reed Fine Art Gallery will host a reception on Friday, Feb. 7, from 5-7 p.m. in conjunction with the Presque Isle First Friday Art Walk. On display through March 8 will be the work of Carrie Scanga, “Navigation Lights,” which pushes the boundaries of traditional printmaking.

“Navigation Lights” features what Scanga calls, etchings that appear “very touched.” Her process includes blowing through a straw to move photocopy toner over the printing plate before etching. The imagery features loosely-drawn night themes such as marine beacons and nighttime at the fair. Light refreshments will be served.
The Reed Fine Art Gallery is open Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The gallery is closed Sundays and University holidays. FMI, call Heather Sincavage at 768-9442 or email heather.sincavage@umpi.edu.

Wintergreen Arts Center

The Aroostook Partners in the Arts will be putting on the second annual Edible Art Night at Wintergreen — a fine-art show of pieces made from only edible substances will be hung and displayed in time for the First Friday Art Walk on Feb. 7. There will be prizes given out to the winners in each of the following categories: Most Humorous, Most Original, Most Palatable, Most Innovative, and Least Palatable.
The fine-art portion of this event is open to all bakers, artists or creative people who want to participate. Pieces must be delivered to Wintergreen by Thursday, Feb. 6, by 2 p.m. The other portion of this event is food made in an artistic way for consumption. For a $10 donation, you will receive a punch card with 10 punches. The food show will have samples of savory items and sweets — all with a value of one to three punches.
There will also be live music, a tinfoil sculpting corner, and a pretzel-twisting element. It is family-oriented and open to everyone who wants to come.
This is a fund-raising effort for Aroostook Partners in the Arts and Wintergreen Arts Center. It is an event like no other in this area and not to be missed. For more information, visit the Wintergreen Facebook page or to participate, call Heather Harvell, interim executive director at Wintergreen, at 749-1075.
