PRESQUE ISLE – Mildred (Harris) Good passed away January 11, 2014, at the Aroostook Medical Center in Presque Isle. She had recently had her 89th birthday and was predeceased by her husband of 61 1/2 years, Franklin H. “Reb” Good of Presque Isle; a brother, Jerome Harris and his wife, Evelyn of Bath; a sister, Martha Marden and her husband, Wilbur of Belfast; three nephews, Lawrence Harris and his wife, Barbara of Bath, and Hugh and Richard Marden of Belfast; a son-in-law, Willard (Bill) Norsworthy of Chapman.
She is survived by two daughters, Remillie Norsworthy of Chapman and Kimberly Stout of Baldwinsville, NY; niece, Gerolyn Howes and family of Hermon and Florida; nephews, Lyndon Harris and family of West Bath, Peter Marden and family of Belfast, Michael Marden and family of Morrill; niece, Cheryl MacLeod and family of Waldo; first-cousin, Marjorie Walsh of North Weymouth, MA; as well as many great-nieces/nephews and more-distant cousins.
Born in Stockton Springs to Ervin and Daisy (Isabelle) (Littlefield) Harris, Millie attended school in Stockton until her graduation as class valedictorian in 1942. As a daughter of a farm family, she had been active in Youth Grange. She moved to Presque Isle in 1943 to aid the War effort as a telephone operator for New England Telephone & Telegraph. She married “Reb” in 1949, and later worked variously at City Drug Store, beside her husband in his restaurant businesses, as assistant school-lunch coordinator for SAD #1 schools, and finally retired as receptionist and phone operator at Maine Potato Growers, all in Presque Isle.
She was a 50+-year member and Past Worthy Matron of Lunar Chapter #126, O.E.S, of Presque Isle, and for several years served as Rainbow Mom for Presque Isle Assembly #20 of the Order of Rainbow for Girls.
She and “Reb” were avid square dancers with the Presque Isle Spud Shufflers, and spent many years traveling to dances and enjoying their travel trailer with family. Though never blessed with grandchildren, Millie got great enjoyment over the years from the antics of her “fur-grandchildren,” Rem’s dogs and Kim’s cats, and also enjoyed spending time with Rem at her camper in Winthrop and visiting relatives and friends in southern Maine. One of her great enjoyments of the past 10 years was her bi-weekly physical-therapy exercise classes under the direction of the youthful staff at County Physical Therapy; she always said it, and they helped to keep her feeling young. Another was getting to know the helpful bus drivers and passengers of the Aroostook Regional Transportation System, by whose aid she was able to maintain her independence and “keep up” with community happenings.
Memorial, committal and fellowship tea with friends and family will take place June 28, 2014, details to be announced later. Those who wish may contribute in Mildred’s memory to the Central Aroostook Humane Society, 26 Cross St., Presque Isle, ME 04769 or to C-A-N-C-E-R (Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery), PO Box 811, Presque Isle, ME 04769.
