NMCC welcomes Williams as director of finance

    PRESQUE ISLE — A certified public accountant with 24 years of experience as a manager, internal auditor and project coordinator is the new director of finance for Northern Maine Community College.

    Michael I. Williams, CPA, CIA, is assuming the position held by Larry LaPlante, who is retiring this month after nine years of service to the college.
    Williams most recently served as chief financial officer at Aroostook Mental Health Services, Inc. of Caribou where he developed budgets for 26 programs in Aroostook, Washington and Hancock counties. Prior to that, he spent 10 years at Maine & Maritimes Corp. and Maine Public Service Co. in Presque Isle. There he served in several capacities including senior vice president, chief financial officer, treasurer and assistant secretary, vice president, controller and chief accounting officer. Williams worked for 12 years with Bangor Hydro-Electric Co. in Bangor as manager of business services, business manager, senior financial associate and internal auditor.
    “We are so pleased to have Michael Williams on board our leadership team. He brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise on a wide range of financial subjects,” said NMCC President Timothy Crowley. “Michael is also community and family oriented which fits in well with our community college values.”
    Williams began his duties Dec. 9.
    “Being part of Northern Maine Community College is an exciting challenge for me,” said Williams. “NMCC is a gem in the community college system and I look forward to applying my skills to this vibrant academic environment.”
    Williams received his bachelor of science degree in business administration from the University of Maine at Orono. He has served as a volunteer for the Maine Special Olympics and a volunteer coach for the Aroostook Youth Basketball League. Williams resides in Presque Isle with his wife, Beth and two children.
    LaPlante will continue acting as treasurer of the NMCC Foundation.
