The swim season opened for the Presque Isle Wildcats Friday as they made the trip to Bangor for a meet against the defending Class A state runner-up Rams at Husson University. The Wildcat boys scored 46 points to Bangor’s 132, while the PI girls notched 45 to the Rams’ 119.
Four swimmers for the Wildcat boys established state-qualifying times in their individual events.
Dustin Drabek qualified in the 100-yard backstroke and the 500-yard freestyle, Nate Dewitt in the 100 butterfly and Alex Hemphill and Matt Burtt in the 100 breaststroke.
Alexis Coiley of Fort Fairfield, who practices with the Wildcats, qualified in both the 500 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke.
The top placements by PI swimmers Friday included the second-place finish by the girls’ 200-yard medley relay team, which consisted of Olivia Goulet, Naomi McEachern, Jackie Lambert and Sara Gilson. Their time was 2 minutes and 29.87 seconds.
In the girls’ 200 IM, Lambert was second in 3:13.59. Heather Nadeau placed second in the 100 free in 1:16.22 and was third in the 50 free with a time of 33.87. Goulet also came in second in the 500 free in 7:50.99 and in the 100 back in 1:35.82.
Gilson, Lambert, McEachern and Nadeau were second in the 200 free relay in 2:15.83.
Gilson, Goulet, Laura Watson and Nadeau made up the runner-up 400 free relay team. Lambert placed second in the 100 breast with a 1:25.3 clocking.
Coiley took first place in the 500 freestyle in 6:27.42 and took the 100 breast in 1:22.45.
Washburn’s lone representative, Alexa Woodman, placed in a pair of events.
On the boys’ side, Joshua Jones, Hemphill, Burtt and Dewitt swam to the win in the 200 free relay in 1:43.84.
Drabek took the 100 back in 1:09.38. Hemphill was first in the 100 breast in 1:15.76 and Burtt was the runner-up in 1:18.29.
The boys’ 400 free relay team, consisting of Jones, Kyle Kilcollins, Leigh Buck and Drabek ended up third in 4:29.6.
Dewitt’s time of 1:01.42 made him the runner-up in the 100 fly. Drabek claimed third place in the 500 free in 6:01.57, while Hemphill was also third with a time of 2:32.96 in the 200 IM.
Drabek, Hemphill, Burtt and Dewitt registered a time of 1:56.91 in the 200 medley relay, good enough to notch a third-place performance.
The Caribou Vikings visit Presque Isle tonight for a 7:30 p.m. meet, which takes place at the Presque Isle Indoor Pool.
