Skiers begin regular season action

MADAWASKA, Maine — A freestyle meet kicked off the Aroostook County high school ski season last Wednesday, and the Presque Isle and Fort Fairfield teams were among those in action.    The top individual placement among local skiers was turned in by Fort Fairfield’s Sarah Beaulieu, who was third in the girls’ race which featured 30 skiers representing six area schools.
Beaulieu crossed the finish line in 14 minutes and 15 seconds.
Her Tigers placed fourth as a team with 77 points. Caribou was the winner with 26, followed by Fort Kent (34) and Madawaska (66).
The race winner was Hannah Streinz of Katahin, whose time was 12:13.
Presque Isle’s lone skier to place among the top 10 in the girls’ race was Bonnie Corey, whose time was 16:17.
In the boys’ competition, Presque Isle was fourth and Fort Faifield fifth out of the six schools taking part.
Leading the way for the Wildcats was Gannon Therrien, who came in at 13:07, good for 10th place out of 35 skiers. Nick Bartlett and Noah Rossignol were 14th and 15th, respectively. Bartlett’s time was 13:30 and Rossignol’s 13:43.
The Tigers’ Thomas Krause was first for his team and 20th overall in 14:34.
Winning the race was Katahdin’s Daniel Streinz in 9:58.
A classic meet was scheduled Tuesday and the first alpine meet is set for Saturday.
