EVANSVILLE, IN – Leroy W. Riggs, 95, died on Wednesday, November 27, 2013, at Solarbron Assisted Living in Evansville, Indiana. He was born July 14, 1918, in Evansville.
Leroy was an active member at Old North Church for over 50 years. He was a veteran of the Army Air Transport Command obtaining the rank of Master Sergeant. Leroy served in northern Maine repairing transport airplanes where he met and married his wife, Marjorie. Leroy was later in charge of the repair of thousands of military airplanes landing in the Azores in the middle of the Atlantic.
After the war Leroy returned to Evansville with Marjorie and after attending training in automobile mechanics, he established Riggs Auto Electric and repaired thousands of cars for residents of Evansville. After retiring in 1981 Leroy trained himself to repair old clocks. He was soon in demand and repaired clocks for many people over the next 15 years.
Leroy moved into Solarbron Assisted Living in 2007 where he resided until his death. The very caring staff at Solarbron and Gentiva Hospice assisted and became close to him in his later years. His daughter-in-law, Sandy Riggs, was especially helpful to him during this period.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie (Lovely) Riggs; brother, Charles Riggs; and sister, Helen Stofft.
Leroy is survived by sons, David and Donald Riggs; brothers Robert Riggs and Lloyd Riggs of Bloomington, Indiana.
Services were held 10 a.m. on Monday, December 2, 2013, at Alexander North Chapel officiated by Rev. Mike Monahan where burial followed in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. Friends visited Sunday, December 1, 2013, from 2 until 6 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to SWIRCA, 16 W. Virginia Street, Evansville, IN 47737.
