PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — The Presque Isle Police Department has been using social media as a public safety tool for several years, beginning with a website and transition with the times, creating a Facebook page and most recently adding a mobile app in an effort to provide up-to-date information and as a way to obtain public input in a timely manner.    “The app allows users to look at an offender database. We input cases a couple times a week. It also includes a GPS feature that gives location and type of criminal cases currently being investigated,” said Chief Matt Irwin, of the PIPD. “The app provides for two-way communication between citizens and the department. Citizens can view the sex offender database, wanted people in Presque Isle, view crime mapping information in their community, report suspicious activity and a variety of other features.”
Irwin said the app also allows the department to post information on people with warrants, including what the warrant is for, as well as AMBER alert information, road closures and any other information of immediate interest to the public.
The chief said the PIPD’s Facebook page has provided a great opportunity for the public to share information on a number of issues – something he hopes will continue with the addition of the app.
“It allows someone to submit a tip in any type of crime. A person can take and upload photos directly to the department. They can also file complaints or commend officers using the app,” said Irwin. “It’s a quick, convenient way to comment on officers and other issues relating to the department.”
Irwin said the program also provides the department with a fast way to disseminate information.
“It allows us to push information out quickly, such as a missing person report. The faster we can get data out and receive responses from the public, the sooner we can find a person or solve a crime,” he said.
The app is also linked to the department’s Facebook and Twitter accounts.
“We can also link news articles on the app,” said Irwin.
Wednesday marks the official unveiling of the app, according to Irwin.
“We officially kicked off the use of the app Nov. 12. The app is now up through the Android store. It will also be available soon through the Apple online store,” he said.
Irwin said those who don’t have smartphones can still receive updates from the department.
“You can sign up and receive texts if you don’t have a smartphone,” said Irwin.
The app was obtained at no cost to the department.
“We were able to obtain the app through local drug forfeiture money. It cost around $1,300. There was no cost to the taxpayer. The app is free download to the public, just search for Presque Isle Police Department,” said Irwin.
Irwin said information obtained from citizens “comes through anonymously.”
“It keeps the public up-to-date and allows interaction with the department, with information coming in anonymously. If you post, your name doesn’t show up,” said Irwin.
