Presque Isle utilities district

To the editor:
In June 2013 the Maine Legislature and the Governor approved a new law to create the Presque Isle Utilities District. This law will merge the Presque Isle Sewer District and the Presque Isle Water District into the Presque Isle Utilities District. As a final step before this law can take effect, it must be approved by the residents of Presque Isle in the municipal election next Tuesday.
Even though the Presque Isle Utilities District will be a new identity, in most respects it will simply reflect the manner in which the two separate districts have been managed and operated over the past 50 years. If approved by the voters, the immediate cost savings will be minor, but over time there should be gains in efficiencies by combining the facilities and the employees under one district. The merger should also enhance governance. The new utilities district will be governed by seven trustees whereas each separate district is currently governed by only three trustees.
As trustees of the Sewer and Water Districts, we urge you to vote in favor of the merger at the municipal elections next Tuesday.
