EASTON NEWS
by Hillary Hallett
Michelle Osgood, of Easton, received her white coat at the White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2017 at Lincoln Memorial University-College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harrogate, Tenn., on Sept. 21.
Osgood is a first-year osteopathic medical student at LMU-DCOM. Prior to enrolling at LMU-DCOM, Osgood attended Husson University.
The White Coat Ceremony is a special ceremony designed to mark a student’s entrance into medical school. The first White Coat Ceremony was held in 1993 at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons and is now a standard ritual in institutions of both allopathic and osteopathic medical education across the country. During the ceremony, each medical student is presented and “robed” with his or her short white laboratory coat, formalizing and welcoming the student’s entrance into the study of medicine.
Family members who traveled to the ceremony included: Thomas and Ann Osgood; Anna and Michael Osgood; Terry and Carolee Flewelling and Katielee, Loren, Peggy, Paige; Mitchell and Chase Flewelling; and Desiree Castonguay.

Students test pond water quality
Third grade class members become “limnologists” as part of their study in science over habitats. Students in grade three took part in a program sponsored by the Francis Malcolm Science Center where they spent the afternoon at our local pond. Vaughn Martin, the nature educator from the center, led the class as we explored the pond community. Students became limnologists for the day as they worked in small groups to gather data and collect samples from the pond to see whether or not it was healthy. We discovered our pond to be healthy with many organisms found within and around the pond. Students enjoyed the afternoon despite the chilly weather.
I would like to say a special thank you to Natasha Carver, Meaghan Ellis, Marilyn Brown and Kristan Bua for helping with this field trip.
Class visits Schoodic Point
The Easton 6th graders recently participated in an annual three-day science trip to Schoodic Point in Acadia National Park. Students in Mrs.Goulet’s science class performed tide pool studies, working with maps, compasses and GPS units, as well as learned about the genealogy of the park.
