PRESQUE ISLE, Maine — From tires to service, Pete’s Performance offers a personal approach that customers have been longing for.
“Everybody I’ve asked says they like to have personal service where you talk to one person from start to finish, and know that the work is done correctly,” said owner Peter Campbell. “That’s the kind of service I provide.
“I sell new tires, as well as repair tires. I sell all brands; I don’t discriminate. I have a few different suppliers, and between them, I can supply practically any brand tire,” he said. “I also do oil changes, brakes, exhaust, shocks … any kind of service work your car needs.”
With winter fast approaching, Campbell also sells snow tires, both with or without tire studs.
“I’ll be studding tires here,” he said, “and doing changeovers for people who already own snow tires.”
Campbell, who took automotives in high school, said he always had a dream of becoming a mechanic.
“I grew up on a farm [Campbell’s Seed Farm in Presque Isle], so I soothed my dream by working on the farm; I did all the mechanic work on all of our equipment and vehicles,” he said. “The farm ended in 1999, so I worked for a construction company as a heavy equipment mechanic for almost a year, and then I had a chance to go back into farming. I worked there for four years, and then I went to another farm as a farm manager and was there for another four years.
“After that I sold tires in Caribou, and that was what I was doing before opening my own business,” said Campbell. “It’s been a dream of mine for a while to have my own business. My position in Caribou ended, so the timing seemed right and one thing led to another.”
Located at 55 Industrial St. in Presque Isle, Pete’s Performance occupies a 5,000 square foot building.
“I have adequate room for storage, supplies and service,” said Campbell, who officially opened in August. “Hopefully I’ll be able to expand if things go well. Right now it’s just me, but I’d love to get to the point where I can hire an employee.
“This is a very high-traffic street, and I’m getting some off-the-street service,” he said. “The visibility is really good.”
