Owl teams busy at Homecoming

    PRESQUE ISLE — The University of Maine at Presque Isle sports teams had a busy weekend as all were in action for the first time this fall.

    The Owl soccer teams hosted Maine Maritime Academy in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon as part of the university’s Homecoming weekend.
    The women’s team used a second-half goal by Chelsea Nickerson of Presque Isle to salvage a tie against the Mariners. She scored at the 62:34 mark after MMA’s Annie Koensgen gave her team the lead approximately 20 minutes earlier. Amanda Larrabee had 10 save in goal for the Owls, while the Mariners’ Taylor O’Malley collected 12 saves.
    The Owls were dealt some bad news when Nicole Cyr of Madawaska suffered a fractured ankle during the match and will miss the remainder of the season.
    In the second game of the day, David Lord scored an unassisted goal in the first half and Nicholas George converted a Kyle Haslam pass in the second as MMA blanked the Owl men, 2-0. The Owls were outshot by a 24-8 margin, with Caleb Bragg-Grady handling the goalkeeping chores for 1-4 UMPI.
    The volleyball team hosted three matches Saturday and were defeated in all of them. Unity and Husson each picked up 3-0 victories, while UM-Machias prevailed, 3-1.
    The cross country teams competed in the University of New England Invitational held in Biddeford Saturday. In the women’s event, Kayla Legassie of Presque Isle completed the three-mile loop in 19:47, good for fifth place overall. Salve Regina University captured the team title and Brittney Sorbello of UNE was the individual champ in 19:17.
    On the men’s side, Corey Hebert was 39th overall to pace the Owls. He had a time of 29:56, with teammate Philip Boody of New Sweden taking 42nd in 30:11. Lyndon State College won the team championship, with team member Kyle Powers winning on the 4.6-mile course in 26:30. UMPI placed 11 out of 13 teams.
    The Owl golf team competed in the Maine Intercollegiate Championships, held Saturday and Sunday at Bangor Municipal Golf Course and hosted by Husson University.
    UMPI placed third for its best finish ever in the event with a team score of 636. Reynold Brown came in with a 158, followed by Mike Balmer with a 159 and DJ Conley and Jordan Beaulier both with 161s. Eric Depner rounded out the Owl competitors and carded a 169.
