FORT FAIRFIELD — Police are asking for the public’s assistance in locating a man who reportedly used a weapon to threaten a local family over the weekend.

“On Aug. 24, at about 2:13 p.m., the Fort Fairfield Police Department responded to a call of a man threatening people with a gun at 209 Houlton Road in Fort Fairfield. Upon arrival, all of the occupants of the house were outside awaiting the officer’s arrival. The man with the gun, identified as FS-PIPDMikeCharmMugshot-cx-sh-35 Michael Charm, 32, of Presque Isle, was reportedly inside the home with a .22 caliber rifle,” said Chief Bill Campbell, of the FFPD.
Campbell said officers secured the scene and attempted to make contact with Charm via his cell phone, though no contact was established.
“After it was determined that Charm was no longer in the house, officers entered the house and the loaded rifle alleged to have been possessed by Charm was secured,” said the chief.
Officers later received information from a family member who told officers that Charm was on the railroad tracks near the Bryant Pond Road in Fort Fairfield.
“A coordinated search was conducted from the air and on the ground. The search lasted for several hours with Charm eluding capture,” said Campbell.
A temporary arrest warrant has been issued for Charm.
“Because Charm is a convicted felon, he will be charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, which is a felony crime. He will also be charged with terrorizing, also a felony crime; and because Charm was already out on bail, he will be charged with violation of conditions of release. Additional charges may also be forthcoming,” Campbell said.
The last known sighting of Charm, a/k/a Michael Smith, was on the White Road in Mars Hill at about 9:30 p.m.
“It is believed that he may be headed to Bangor or to West Haven, Conn. Charm was last seen wearing a blue and gray long-sleeved shirt and blue jeans. He has short brown hair, hazel eyes, weighs 140 pounds and is 5 feet, 8 inches tall. It is not believed that he is currently armed but he should not be approached,” said Campbell.
If you believe you have seen Charm or have any information of his whereabouts, please call the FFPD at 472-3808 or the State Police at 532-5400.
Assisting the FFPD with this investigation were the Maine State Police, Maine Warden Service, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection aircraft.
