T8-R9 — Libby Sporting Camps, located on Millinocket Lake in T8-R9, was recently named “Best Sporting Camp for Foodies” in this year’s Best of Maine Down East issue. From shopping to eating to playing outdoors, Down East readers and editors selected their statewide favorites this year and Libby Camps made the list.
Winners of the “Best of Maine” awards are selected for one of two categories — Readers’ Choice or Editors’ Choice. Ideas for the annual Editors’ Choice Best of Maine Down East are collected throughout the year as the magazine’s editors and contributors travel the state. The Readers’ Choice nominees are identified and voted on by Down East readers. Individual categories include Outdoors, Food and Drink, Culture, Family, Lodging and more.
“Maine is such a special place for so many people,” said Down East Editor-in-Chief Paul Doiron. “Whether you’re a native or have been visiting for years, everyone has a Maine favorite. The ‘Best of’ awards are the perfect way to celebrate these well-loved people, places and more, and the results might introduce you to another Maine gem!”
Libby’s has been in operation since 1890 serving hunters and fishermen from around the world looking to explore the wilds of Maine. Libby’s is currently run by the fifth generation of Libbys — Matt and Jessica. They have also been recognized as the “Orvis Fly Fishing Lodge of the Year” in 2006 and in 2010 was celebrated by the Maine Tourism Hall of Fame.
“Libby’s is very much honored to be included in this group of outstanding businesses,” said Matt. “The state of Maine is full of some of the best places on earth and we are humbled to be included among them.”
According to Down East’s website, “Making the trek to Libby Camps on Millinocket Lake (the northern one) is a long haul. But the appetite you’ll build up in getting there will serve you well. This century-old sporting camp offers some of the best food you can find in the Maine woods. Whether it’s the hearty grilled cheese sandwich on thick homemade bread or the deliciously sweet baked beans or a slice of berry pie, the from-scratch food coming out of Jessica Libby’s friendly kitchen never fails to please — and fuel you up for snowmobiling, canoeing, cross-country skiing, fishing, or one of the many other activities at your fingertips.”
The full list of “Best of Maine” winners appears in the July issue of Down East.
