Hughes records hole-in-one at PICC

    Presque Isle Country Club’s first hole-in-one of 2013 was turned in by Gary Hughes of Presque Isle June 11.

    Hughes used an eight-iron on the 150-yard 17th hole, with Liam Hughes, Travis Dyer and Karson Eaton witnessing the shot.

Volleyball camp coming to UMPI

    The University of Maine at Presque Isle volleyball program will hold a summer skills camp the week of July 22-26. The camp is open for girls entering sixth through 12th grades and takes place in Wieden Hall on the UMPI campus.
    Owl head volleyball coach Mark Kornachuk will direct the camp. Kornachuk is a graduate of the University of Tennessee and has 25 years of volleyball experience.
    The clinic will be held daily from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. and the cost is $50, which includes a camp T-shirt. Team discounts are available. For more information, contact Kornachuk at Mark.kornachuk@gmail.com or 999-9836.

Milk Run scheduled Sunday during Farm Fest

    A road race has been added to the events of this weekend’s Farm Fest at Maple Meadow Farms in Mapleton.
    The Maine Dairy Promotion Board will sponsor the Farm Fest 5K Milk Run, which will start at 8 a.m. on Sunday, June 30. The race is open to all ages and is a 3.2-mile easy to moderate course.
    The course starts with a low gradual hill, flattens a bit, turns into a downhill and ends on a moderate hill that turns into a flat. It starts at Rt. 163, turns left onto the Griffin Ridge Road, bears right onto the Garland Road and a left back on to Rt. 163. There will be water stops at miles one and two and the finish. The race begins and ends at Maple Meadow Farms.
    Runners will be able to refuel with chocolate milk at the end of the race, and each participant will receive a T-shirt and goodie bag. Because this is the first Milk Run, the race will be capped at 100 runners. The cost to run is $20. Registration will be taken at the Maine Dairy Promotion Board’s booth at Farm Fest on Saturday, June 29 or anytime online at www.raceit.com.

SAD 1 coaches to offer Wildcat Soccer Camp

    The SAD 1 soccer coaching staff is offering “Wildcat Soccer Camp” July 22-26.
    The camp, held on the turf field at the Presque Isle Middle School, is open to experienced and inexperienced players and serves as a great opportunity to tune up for the high school, middle school or recreation seasons.
    The staff includes varsity boys’ coach Joe Greaves, varsity girls’ coach Ralph Michaud, assistant boys’ coach Tim McCue, assistant girls’ coach Dillon Kingsbury, JV boys’ coach Brian Cronin, JV girls’ coach Audra Kirk and middle school coaches Jeff Hudson, Sam Clukey, Mike Patenaude and Monica Bearden.
    Also assisting will be current and former Wildcat standouts Chandler Guerrette, Megan Ireland, Jonah Stephenson and Ben Nickerson.
    Girls and boys entering grades 3-6 will play in the first session from 3-5 p.m. and those entering grades 6-9 will attend the second session which runs from 5-7 p.m. Sixth-graders may choose either session, but it is recommended they choose the one based on their ability level.
    The camp will introduce young players to the fundamentals of the game and will improve the skills of the more experienced players. There will be drills, individual competitions and team games, with an emphasis on sportsmanship and having fun.
    The cost is $45 per student, with discounts provided to families with two or more participants.
    Registration forms can be picked up at any SAD 1 school, the William V. Haskell Community Center or the high school athletic office. Students may pre-register at the athletic office or may wait and register on the first day of camp, up to 30 minutes before it begins.
