ACAP to observe National HIV Testing Day
PRESQUE ISLE — This year’s theme for National HIV Testing Day (NHTD) is “Take the Test. Take Control.”
NHTD, which is Thursday, June 27, was established as an annual observance to promote HIV testing.
Aroostook County Action Program (ACAP) will offer walk-in, no-cost testing at their health service locations in Fort Kent and Presque Isle from 8-11 a.m. and in Houlton from 1-4 p.m. June 27.
“Too many people don’t know they have HIV. In the United States, nearly 1.2 million people are living with HIV, and almost one in five don’t know they are infected,” said Jo-Ellen Kelley, community education specialist for ACAP. “Getting tested is the first step to finding out if you have HIV. If you have HIV, getting medical care and taking medicines regularly helps you live a longer, healthier life and also lowers the chances of passing HIV on to others.”
