CLEANING FIDDLEHEADS

Fresh fiddleheads are a sure sign of spring. For those unable to pick their own, there are several options, including road-side sellers and stores that buy the delicacy from local pickers.
Marissa Chasse of Ashland, at left, and Alexis Flewelling of Masardis are pictured in Mapleton here on a recent Saturday, helping Troy Haines of Mapleton clean several pounds of the much-sought-after fern. There are many methods used to clean fiddleheads, but the girls found a fan does a great job.
