Cancer survivors
to be honored as ‘stars’ at Relay
CARIBOU — County cancer survivors will get the “star treatment” this Friday evening as TAMC hosts Hollywood-themed activities at the start of the annual Aroostook County Relay for Life at the Caribou High School track.
Survivors will be invited to walk the red carpet before participating in the first lap of the event, which is dedicated to those who have fought cancer. TAMC President and CEO Sylvia Getman will invite survivors to gather prior to the walk for self-introductions and to share, with the hundreds gathered, the length of time that has passed since their diagnosis.
“Cancer touches each and every one of us. Everyone knows someone who has been a victim to this terrible disease,” said Getman. “At TAMC, we witness the true strength of cancer survivors as many seek treatment through our Aroostook Cancer Care service. Additionally, we have recognized survivors throughout this past year with the opening of The County Cancer Hall of Courage at TAMC. Just like our hall is dedicated to survivors, so is this event; they are an inspiration to us all.”
Following the welcome and first lap honoring the strength and solidarity of survivors, will be a special lap designated for caregivers, those individuals who serve as help and support for those affected by the illness.
The special caregivers’ lap will be followed by a Hollywood-inspired reception spotlighting area surviving stars, and sponsored by TAMC, in a large tent set up in the center of the track. Superstars of the event will receive VIP treatment, complete with hors d’oeuvres, punch and a ‘star’ inspired “Wall of Fame.” Survivors will be encouraged to commemorate their evening on the red carpet by taking a photo with friends and family in front of a one-of-a kind VIP sponsor wall just like what is seen at traditional Hollywood award shows like the Grammys, Emmys and Oscars.
The evening’s fun continues outside the tent, as well, with a variety of dance-inspired activities designed to promote cancer awareness and the importance of cancer screenings, treatment and prevention.
“The evening will be full of fun and will honor all survivors, helping us all celebrate more birthdays. We encourage every survivor to come join us. Folks can register both on site that evening or, in advance, online at relayforlife.org/aroostookme,” said Shelly Hewitt of TAMC, one of the lead volunteers and coordinators for the Aroostook County Relay for Life survivor activities.
This year’s Relay for Life event is extra special as 2013 marks the centennial celebration of The American Cancer Society, which works collaboratively with local organizing committees across the country to host events like the one in Caribou this Friday-Saturday.
The Aroostook County Relay for Life officially kicks off at 6 p.m. Friday, May 31 and concludes Saturday, June 1. For more information on the event in Caribou, visit relayforlife.org/aroostookme or contact Hewitt at 768-4857 or shewitt@tamc.org.
