If you would like to donate items for this sale, call the library at 429-9625. Arrangements can be made to pick up your donations. United Methodist Women

The Mars Hill UMW met in the church vestry on May 6 at noon with nine members attending. Lunch was enjoyed followed by a delicious dessert provided by Marie Hewitt, with Joan Boone and Elaine Bailey assisting.
The meeting was called to order by President Donna Brewer with all joining in praying the Prayer of Invocation, followed by repeating the Purpose of the UMW. The secretary’s report was read and accepted as read. Diane Ketchum gave the treasurer’s report and it was accepted as read. Several thank-you notes were received and read by Diane.
An invitation to a morning “tea” given by the Presque Isle UMW for May 18 was discussed and many were interested in attending.
President Donna announced that the UMW Annual Conference will be on June 12 at Gordon College in Boston. President Donna will be attending with Pastor Sue Brown.
Marie Hewitt reminded us that June 23 will be the closing of the Easton Methodist Church for the summer.
The June meeting will be “out-to-lunch” on June 4. Tentative plans were made to eat at the Sidewalk Cafe in Houlton. Donna will call and make reservations.
Marie Hewitt, program chair, presented a very interesting and enjoyable program. She read several short humorous articles by M. Josepowitz, PhD — very timely and appropriate for the age group attending.
The meeting was adjourned by all saying the UMW benediction. Those attending were: Donna Brewer, Elaine Bailey, Marie Hewitt, Frances Banks, Joan Walsh, Joan Boone, Daisy Campbell, Diane Ketchum and Clara Hussey.

Rotary Club

The Mars Hill Rotary Club met on Tuesday, May 7, at 6:30 a.m. at the Aroostook Health Center. The speakers were Kennedy Day and Stephanie Dame, members of the Junior Class at Central Aroostook High School. They showed pictures and spoke about the eight-day trip to Spain they participated in with several other students and chaperones from April 13-20. Each student had to raise over $3,000 for the trip and they spent a couple of years doing fundraisers to gather the money.
Participants flew out of Bangor, changing planes in Philadelphia before flying into Madrid. Spain is about the same size as the state of Texas, but there are a lot more people.
They spent time in Madrid visiting museums, churches, parks, statues and just seeing the sights. They were impressed with all the architectural details on the buildings. They also enjoyed all the street vendors selling food and other items as well as all the street performers.
They visited the city of Toledo, a city built up on a hill that had a more authentic Spanish feel to it. It was a lot more the way they expected Spain to be.
In Barcelona, they visited the Olympic site, the Hard Rock Cafe and also participated in a scavenger hunt.

Recreation news

Swimming lessons continue on Thursdays. Walking continues daily from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. as well as various adult activities in the evening.
Summer programming has been finalized, so please keep an eye out in your child’s backpack to get their copy. All students will receive one from school. It is full of programs, camps, clinics, pool and sports information for the summer.

East Ridge Service

The East Ridge Union Church in Mars Hill will hold a Youth Appreciation Sunday on May 19 at 10 a.m. They will recognize all their youth — from infants to college age. The Easton Wesleyan Puppet Ministry will be performing, as will 2013 Miss Mars Hill Kayla Cushman, who will sing “Redeemer”
A hotdog and hamburger barbecue will follow for all to enjoy.
