Councilors to review Tax Reform Program

PRESQUE ISLE — City Manager Jim Bennett provided councilors an overview of the Tax Reform Program currently being discussed in Augusta during Monday night’s meeting.
Under the program, a number of revisions would be made to current tax laws, including increase Homestead Exemption to $50,000 or 50 percent of a homeowner’s tax bill, whichever is less. Bennett said the figures he provided councilors are tentative, since lawmakers won’t be discussing the matter until at public this Friday.
“I think by the end of this week we may have a better sense how this will play out,” said Bennett, “although I’m not sure we’d have much more next Monday to help try to understand this.”
Despite the uncertainty, a special council meeting has been set for 4 p.m. on Monday, May 13, at City Hall to continue discussion on the proposed tax changes that will affect municipalities statewide.
