Villoria sets mark for UM-Presque Isle
PRESQUE ISLE — After playing their first 35 games on the road, the University of Maine at Presque Isle baseball team finally got to host, and a pair of milestones – one individual and one team – were reached.

UMPI SENIOR Carlos Villoria of Caracas, Venezuela tosses the ball to his coach for safe keeping. Villoria had just hit a double to set the UMPI record for hits in a season during in the first game of a doubleheader against EMCC on Sunday afternoon at Presque Isle High School.
Carlos Villoria, a senior from Caracus, Venezuela, became the school’s new single-season hits leader by going 10 for 14 in the four contests against Eastern Maine Community College of Bangor, played Saturday and Sunday at Presque Isle High School. He ended the season with 62 hits, which topped the previous mark of 58 established in 2009 by Tyler Delaney.
By sweeping the weekend series, by scores of 7-0 and 13-0 on Saturday and 11-0 and 12-1 Sunday, UMPI finished the season with a 16-23 record to finish with two more victories than the previous team mark of 14, which was also set in 2009.
The games were the final ones of the season for UMPI, which went 9-3 over its final 12 contests and finished a perfect 7-0 against the Eagles.
On Sunday, UMPI took game one, 11-0, as Jake Fillebrown tossed a complete-game three-hitter for his third pitching win of the spring.
The Owls banged out 14 hits, with Justin Bergeron and Alex Csiernik notching three each and Josiah Brasier and Villoria adding two each.
In the second contest, Fillebrown hit his second home run of the season and had two other hits, while Jordan Duffy and Stephen Thorne also had three hits each for the winners as the Owls put together a 16-hit attack.
Ghazaleh Sailors started and pitched into the sixth inning, allowing just one run on six hits. The loss was suffered by Caribou High School alum Royce Landeen, who allowed four earned runs during his four-inning outing for the Eagles.
In Saturday’s opener, junior pitcher Dylan Worster picked up his fourth win of the season by scattering six hits over six shutout innings, while Jordan Perry pitched a perfect seventh in the 7-0 triumph.
Duffy had three hits and Villoria went 2 for 2 and stole four bases to lead the Owls’ offense.
Game two that afternoon saw freshman Adam Geel pitch a five-inning gem to record the win. He struck out seven and allowed just three hits during the stint. He gave way to Sailors and Max Mayer, who each tossed scoreless innings to close out the shutout victory.
Offensively, Villoria had four hits, while Shane Smith and Duffy combined for three more The first three batters in the Owl lineup combined to score four runs and drive in eight.
The Owls’ six seniors, Fillebrown, Thorne, Villoria, Duffy, Mayer and Anthony Batchelder, were honored between games. Fillebrown and Thorne were the team’s lone four-year players for coach Leo Saucier.
The UMPI softball team’s four scheduled games against EMCC were cancelled due to the Eagles’ lack of available players. The Owls’ only senior, Kellie Peers of Limestone, was recognized prior to Saturday’s baseball games for her four years of service to the school’s softball program.
