Girls split with MDI, top Vikes

PRESQUE ISLE — The Wildcat girls’ tennis team used close victories by Hilary Boucher in second singles and by Michelle Cawley and Frances Castro in No. 2 doubles to defeat visiting Mount Desert Island, 3-2, in one of two doubleheader matches played Saturday afternoon at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.
Boucher bested Caroline Brown of the Trojans, 9-7, while Cawley and Castro topped Sam Krasnow and Morgan Kelley in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (8-6).
Presque Isle’s other win was claimed by Sara Gilson in No. 1 singles. She beat Madeline Cook, 8-2.
In the other match, MDI won, 4-1. Cawley and Castro provided the Wildcats with their lone win, 8-6.
The ’Cat boys were defeated twice by the Trojans. The scores in each match were 4-1. No. 3 singles player Chase Norton was able to come away with both PI wins. He beat Teryn Miller in one, 8-1, and Luke Krebs in the other, 8-1.
Against Caribou Thursday in the regular season opener, the PI girls scored a 3-2 win, while the boys were blanked, 5-0.
The Wildcat girls, 2-1 heading into yesterday’s home match against Fort Kent, got a win in No. 2 singles from Gilson, 9-8 (7-4) over Caribou’s Erin Patton, while Blair Bailey and Lora Ireland combined for an 8-6 win over Clara Collins and Emma Duplissie-Cyr and Cawley and Castro downed Makayla Bouchard and Anna Soderberg, 8-4.
