Track and field season under way

    The Presque Isle, Fort Fairfield and Washburn track and field teams were all in action for a pair of meets held during last week’s spring vacation.

    At Brewer April 15, all three teams were represented. The PI girls placed fifth with 46 points, the Fort girls were sixth with 42 and Washburn was 10th with eight.
    Amanda Bennett of the Wildcats won the 1,600-meter race walk in a time of 9:16.78, with teammate Bonnie Corey following in 9:41.65.
    Fort’s Nicole Giberson was second in the 400-meter dash in 1:08.86 and Washburn’s Joan Overman was the runner-up in the 100 in 13.65 seconds. Logan Bubar of the Tigers came in second in the javelin with a throw of 85 feet, 6 inches.
    In the discus, PI’s Regan Nelson won with a mark of 80 feet, 5 inches. Bubar was second at 72 feet, 7 inches, while FF’s Megan Jellison was third at 71 feet, 1 inch.
    Nelson also picked up the victory in the shot put with a mark of 30 feet, 11.25 inches. Cameo Madore of PI was third at 26 feet, 8.75 inches.
    On the boys’ side, Fort Fairfield was fifth with 52 points and Presque Isle scored 17, good for eighth place in the standings.
    Andrew Lewis of the Tigers had a pair of first-place performances, winning the high jump by clearing 6 feet, 2 inches and also taking the discus with a mark of 144 feet, 3 inches. Lewis also placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 40 feet, 11 inches.
    Also for Fort Fairfield, Caleb Daigle took second in the 400 in 57.34 seconds and Johnny Theriault was third in the 300 hurdles in 48.03 seconds.
    Presque Isle’s 4 X 100 relay team of Jeremy Gingrich, Mitchell Kelley, Michael Donovan and Matt Tilley placed third in 48.76 seconds.
    On Saturday, the venue was once again Brewer for the Presque Isle and Washburn teams, while Fort Fairfield made the trip to Bangor.
    The PI boys scored 55 points to take fifth place out of 10 teams. Gabe Player was second in the 300 hurdles in 46.15 seconds, Mitchell Ayotte was second in the high jump at 5 feet, 6 inches, the 4 X 100 relay team was second and the 4 X 400 team was third.
    The Wildcats girls scored 89 points to take third place out of nine teams. Nelson won the shot put at 29 feet, 4 inches and Bennett repeated as the race walk winner with a 9:10.52 clocking.
    Nelson was also second in the discus (75 feet, 3 inches) and Corey was the runner-up in the race walk at 9:48.23. Jessica Baldwin was second in the 3,200 in 14:26.79.
    PI’s 4 X 800 relay team placed second in 12:30.64 and the 4 X 400 relay team was third in 5:13.79, as was the 4 X 100 team in 57.82 seconds.
    Marianna Helton was the lone Washburn athlete to score points. She was fourth in the 3,200 in 15:31.33.
    Placing first for the Fort Fairfield boys, which placed fourth as a team with 68.5 points, were Daigle in the 400 (55.5 seconds) and Lewis in the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches) the discus (146 feet, 10 inches) and the triple jump (42 feet, 4.5 inches).
    The Tiger girls scored 63 points, placing them fourth out of eight teams. The squad did not have any individual event winners, but Janae Libby was second in the pole vault (7 feet) and third in the 300 hurdles (54.86), Bubar was second in the discus (77 feet, 5 inches) and third in the javelin (86 feet, 9 inches) and Teresa Maynard was second in the high jump (4 feet, 6 inches).
