Fort youth set goal to help the world

by Sarah Holbrook
NHS Chapter President, Fort Fairfield High School

Being an NHS member means helping the world through the four pillars of NHS. Whether its holding a fundraiser for a global charity (Service), leading a clothing drive for a local food bank (Leadership), a tutor session with a classmate (Scholarship), or bettering yourself (Character), NHS members make a difference in themselves and others to make the world a better place.

This year, the Fort Fairfield National Honor Society Chapter raised funds for a community Fall Fun Fest, the Stop Hunger Now Project, and Wide Horizons for Children: Ethiopia.
We asked for donations from local businesses and organizations to hold the Fall Fun Fest. Over 100 kids were able to participate in the candy-grabbing, prize-winning, costume-wearing and pumpkin-painting fun at this year’s safe fall event. We painted faces for Spirit Week at the elementary school and donated the funds to the Stop Hunger Now Project. For just a quarter we could buy a meal for an impoverished person around the globe.
We then held Penny Wars, where students competed for a Party-in-a-Box and points in the Spirit Week competition. We raised over $1,000 and donated $420 towards our Ethiopian sponsorship of Tinsuka and Kilinton Mekenon. This allowed them to receive an education, meals and more.
Finally, we held a potato selling fundraiser at the Fort Fairfield Chamber of Commerce’s annual Agri-Business Trade Fair and raised over $400. We are going to donate our extra funds to deserving local projects and next year’s Fall Fun Fest. We would like to thank the chamber for the continued support, as well as the many local businesses and organizations that continue to support our projects.
