PRESQUE ISLE — The Presque Isle Police Department has undergone some recent transitions, with the departure of a few officers, the arrival of others and the hiring of at least one dispatcher.
Police Chief Matt Irwin said he’s pleased with the new staffing and transitions have been smooth.
“Officer Ryan Eagles took Officer Pete Johnson’s place. He’s currently at the Academy — began in January and should be done come May,” said Irwin.
Johnson was appointed to a rotational position with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency. When his term expires, another PIPD officer will be selected to take his place.
Prior to joining the PIPD, Eagles served as a part-time officer at both the Limestone and Fort Fairfield police departments.
“Ryan’s basic employment has been in security,” Irwin said.
Kyle White was also hired recently as an officer with the department.
“We lost Rob Thibeault to the Aroostook County Sheriff’s Office. Kyle was hired to fill Rob’s position. Kyle’s been training as a police officer since earlier this winter,” said the chief.
Prior to joining the PIPD, White served as a court marshal at Presque Isle District Court and other security positions.
“Kyle’s getting ready to start National Guard training. He’s slated to attend the Police Academy from August through December,” said Irwin. “After that, he’ll go to military boot camp.”
Irwin said staffing shouldn’t be an issue when White’s National Guard duties require his absence.
“I’m confident we’ll be able to accommodate Kyle’s National Guard week commitment,” said Irwin.
A third vacancy resulted when Officer Lynn Hartley took a position in North Carolina.
“Amber Cole, who’s served as a dispatcher — and whose goal was to move along internally — was interested in the opening and has been training to take Lynn’s place,” said the chief.
Prior to joining the PIPD, Cole worked with the ACSO as a transportation deputy. Cole also served as a part-time officer with the Limestone Police Department.
Taking Cole’s spot in dispatch is William Jepson.
“William joins in the rotation with full-time dispatchers Pam Sutherland, Joan Carlson and Tom King. William’s from downstate and also has an interest in moving along to patrol,” said Irwin.
Jepson’s work experience includes working security at a mill in Madawaska, as well as dispatching.
“I’m pleased with our current staffing. We’re adequately staffed to meet the needs of the community,” said Irwin.
