Maine Agri Women read to Mapleton students

MAPLETON NEWS

by Jennifer Buzza

Maine Agri Women Mary Anne Buck and Judy Kenney recently read the Ag in the Classroom book, “Dairy Farming for ME” to the pre-kindergarten, kindergarten, first and second grades at Mapleton Elementary School.

Each classroom heard the story, received posters, follow-up lesson plans were given to the teacher, and a bookmark was left for each student. The books then were donated to the classrooms. Volunteers from the Maine Dairy Promotion Board and Dairy Nutrition Council teamed with MAITC this year to collect the pictures of real Maine dairy farms and farm families. The students enjoyed the idea of learning about the farmers and animals that help feed us.
Funding for this project is — in part — a result of the Ag license plate, funding from the Maine Dairy Promotion Board, and a grant from USDA.
Last year the Read ME Agriculture reached over 12,000 students and 600 classrooms. Maine Agri Women also read the book to schools in Belfast, Mars Hill, Houlton, Monticello, Fort Fairfield, St Agatha and Madawaska.
