The Frostbitten Fortress

By Maxwell Bartley

I stepped into the pond,
it was safe, right?
At least they said so.

As I got deeper into the pond the
surface glazed over with ice.
I thought, it was just a thin layer,
nothing I couldn’t break through.

Then it hit me,

like a cold, steel blade.
We weren’t getting out unless we fought back.
Trying to break out, I punched like a boxer going for the win.
Many were pounding now that I had started.

Finally, like shattering glass, the ice broke.

We had finally escaped the grasp of this thick,
cold,
heartless
master who had kept us locked up inside this
frostbitten fortress.
Finally we had escaped Sobibor.

The world seemed colder.
We were frostbitten by evil.
We had seen death and it sucked the life out of us.

Like a vacuum cleaner sucking up dirt,
our souls were sucked away by that same master
who had kept us in

the frostbitten fortress.
