Guerrette, Saucier to play at Husson
BANGOR — Chandler Guerrette of Presque Isle and Rashell Saucier of Washburn have paid their initial deposits to attend Husson University in the fall of 2013 and plan to play basketball next winter.
They will be joined by three other recruits — Taylor Blood of Mattanawcook Academy, Morgan Merchant of Jonesport-Beals High School and Jessica Bell of Piscataquis Community High School.
After only graduating one senior, captain Kelli Murray, from the 2012-13 squad, Husson looks to add to their young but talented team.
“We are very excited to have landed these five recruits,” said Husson coach Kissy Walker. “All five young women are quality student-athletes who we look forward to seeing contribute to the team. We are hopeful to add even more recruits to this talented group.”
Guerrette has an impressive resume. The 5-5 point guard has led her team to the Class B state title each of the past two seasons. She was named Bangor Daily News all-state third team as a junior and joined the 1,000-point club this year. She has been a member of the Big East all-conference team for the last four seasons and was co-player of the year as a senior. She was named the Eastern Maine Class B tournament MVP both as a junior and senior.
She led the Big East in free throw percentage at 81 percent and averaged 15.2 points, 3.2 assists, and 3.4 steals per game, while shooting 51 percent from the field.
“We are thrilled to have Chandler join our program, she is a crafty point guard who can penetrate, shoot, and distribute the ball,” Walker said. “She sees the floor well and controls the offense … she is the missing piece we needed to complement our team.”
Saucier is a 5-foot-9 guard-forward from Washburn. She is a transfer from the University of Maine at Presque Isle, where she played for two seasons. Saucier was UMPI’s leading scorer, averaging 12.5 points and 10.6 rebounds per game in 2011-12. She took the 2012-13 season off to work so that she could continue to pursue her college dreams.
“Now is the time for a new chapter in my life, I am very excited to explore new land, very excited to meet new people, get into my occupational therapy degree, and play for coach Walker and my new team,” Saucier said.
