Changes with the garbage collection system
IN THE CITY
by Dana H. Fowler
Several changes have occurred recently in the Pay-As-You-Throw (PAYT) Program that we want to make you aware of. The towns of Washburn, Wade, and Perham had a meeting in January and decided to discontinue the PAYT collection in their towns.
This means that on March 1, 2013 residents in those towns will have to contract with a waste hauler to pick up their trash or transport it to the Presque Isle Landfill themselves. PAYT will continue as usual in the municipalities of Presque Isle, Mapleton, Chapman and Castle Hill.
The following is a list of retailers where you can purchase PAYT bags: Bradley’s Citgo ‘N Convenience Store, Graves Shop ‘N Save, Maine Potato Growers, Star City IGA, Star City Sanitation, Steaks ‘N Stuff, and Walmart.
As a reminder, blue recycling bags are no longer sold in combo packages with PAYT bags. Blue recycling bags can be purchased separately at: Bradley’s Citgo ‘N Convenience Store, Graves Shop ‘N Save, Star City IGA, and Walmart.
If you should have your full blue bag of recyclables left behind at the curb by your waste hauler, please call the Solid Waste Division at 760-2712. We will be happy to discuss possible reasons why your hauler did not collect your blue bag. One of the common problems is that residents are placing non-recyclable items in their blue bags. For example, the only recyclable plastics in our program are PET #1 and HDPE #2 plastic bottles with a neck. All other plastics are trash.
If you have any questions on PAYT or recycling, you can contact us at 760-2712 or visit our website at www.presqueisle.govoffice2.com for the latest information.
