Towns transition from PAYT

WASHBURN NEWS

by Beth Boddy

On Jan. 29, the residents of Perham, Wade and Washburn voted at a special town meeting to withdraw from the Pay-As-You-Throw program. You can continue using the orange bags through the end of February, but as of March 1 a change will need to be made.

Residents can either hire a hauler of their choice to take their garbage to the landfill, or each resident can take their garbage to the landfill in Presque Isle themselves. If you have any questions regarding this process, please feel free to contact your respective town office. In Washburn, the number is 455-8485.

Piper Campbell, SAD 45 first grade student, shows off her valentine craft at the Washburn Memorial Library.

On Feb. 13, Ms. Sines’ first grade class from Washburn Elementary School attended a valentine story and craft hour at the Washburn Memorial Library. Each child was allowed to check out one brand new hardcover children’s book that had been donated by The Libri Foundation. The books were furnished courtesy of a matching grant, which many library board and community members contributed to on the library’s behalf. The mission of The Libri Foundation, (a non-profit organization) is to donate new, quality, hardcover children’s books to small, rural public libraries in the United States. We are so grateful for their assistance and the children were very excited about bringing home something new to read!

During the weekend of Feb. 16-17, Scouts and leaders of Washburn Boy Scout troop 177 were at Aroostook State Park for the annual North Star District Winterama. The boys constructed a polar snow dome for sleeping in on Saturday night and a winter kitchen for cooking their meals for the weekend.

During the day on Saturday the Scouts were active taking part in several trail events to show their Scouting skills, such as tying knots, first aid, ice rescue, fire building and cooking, animal track identification and snowshoeing, to name a few. The Scouts pulled a Klondike sled (dog sled) with all the needed trail gear to be used at each site.

On Saturday evening Scouts and leaders slept in the polar snow dome that was incredibly warm and cozy for the night. Those attending were: Bryce Roix, Caleb Thompson, Tyler Jardine, Alex Hyde, Andrew Lagassie, Carvor Pendexter, and Paul Tardie. Leaders were Scoutmaster Larry Harrison, Assistant Scoutmaster Tim Roix and Trevor Pendexter.

Any boys 11 years or older interested in being part of these great adventures, you are welcome to stop by troop meetings any Thursday evening at 7 p.m.

Perham Ladies

The Perham Ladies is searching for information on who might be our eldest community member. We would like to honor them by presenting them with our Perham Cane at a supper to be held some time in March, date to be determined. Contact Ellie or Debra or any one of the Perham Ladies if you have information to share. We will need an exact birth date, year included. The hope is we will present the cane at a supper held in honor of the recipient and their family. It is a very special evening and we need your help to make this happen. Thank you.

A reminder, The Perham Ladies send out get-well cards and cards of condolence. If you know of someone who is unwell or in mourning and needs to know they are being thought of, please contact any of the ladies or specifically Mrs. Sylvia Wardwell.
