PI hockey falls short vs. Brewer

    PRESQUE ISLE — Unable to hold on to leads of 1-0 and 3-1, the Presque Isle Wildcats fell just short in their upset bid over Brewer at home Saturday afternoon.

    The Witches, the No. 2-ranked team in Eastern Maine Class B hockey, swept the season series with PI with the 5-4 victory. Brewer, now 10-3 on the campaign, had also won, 3-1, in Brewer on Dec. 22.

    Dylan Severance had a hat trick and Spencer Valley a goal and three assists for the winners. Gabe Valley had a goal and two assists, while Gehrig White, who played youth hockey in Presque Isle, added an assist for Brewer.

    Freshman Cooper Madore netted two goals, while Andrew Michaud tallied a goal and an assist and Tyler Seeley two assists for Presque Isle. Adam Flynn had the Wildcats’ other goal and Colin McKay and Mikey Michaud each added assists.

    PI held a 32-20 advantage in shots on goal. Patrick Spaulding had 28 saves for Brewer and Jillian Flynn 15 for the ’Cats.

    Presque Isle fell to 7-7 on the season. The team is currently in sixth place in the EM B standings, six points behind No. 4 Hampden Academy and three behind No. 5 Orono in the Heal Point rankings. The top seven teams make the playoffs.

    PI and the Broncos will meet Saturday at 1 p.m. at Penobscot Ice Arena in Brewer, while the Wildcats’ next home game is Feb. 13 against Orono at 6 p.m.
