KARIN PETRIN, of Presque Isle, a business administration major at Northern Maine Community College, is congratulated by Tom Richard, NESHRM president, after being named a 2012 NESHRM scholarship recipient.
Karin Petrin of Presque Isle, a NMCC senior majoring in business administration, and Janelle Horten of Hodgdon, a senior UMPI business administration major, recently received the Deborah Kierstead and Milton Bailey Memorial Scholarship from the Northeast Society for Human Resource Management (NESHRM).
NESHRM is affiliated with the Society of Human Resource Management. The group established the scholarship in honor of two of their members who exemplified leadership and community service. Officials annually present the scholarship to two students.
The scholarship is open to students currently enrolled in a business-related program at NMCC, UMPI, the University of Maine at Fort Kent or Husson University in Presque Isle. Scholarship applicants must have a career goal in business, and exhibit traits of leadership and service to the school and community.
In addition to her business major, Horten is studying geographic information systems software and is involved in a cemetery mapping project in her community.
“The resources made available to me through UMPI, the Houlton Higher Education Center and NESHRM have enabled me to start making a real difference in my community,” Horten said.
Clare Exner, chair of UMPI’s College of Professional Programs, nominated Horten for the scholarship, citing her determination to make a difference in whatever she sets out to do.
“As Janelle completes her degree and moves on, I feel confident predicting that her leadership style, interpersonal skills, work ethic and strong sense of commitment will single her out as a business professional with high potential, as well as a community member engaged in service in significant ways,” Exner said.
Petrin is actively involved in several organizations including the Presque Isle Historical Society, the Crown of Maine Balloon Fest and Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society of two-year colleges.
“I am thankful to receive this prestigious scholarship which will help me pursue my passion of supporting small business with financial, development and strategic planning,” said Petrin.
Pam Crawford, NMCC business administration instructor, enthusiastically supported Petrin’s application for the scholarship.
“Karin has made the commitment to further enhance her learning so that she can become a significant contributor to the economic development of Aroostook County,” Crawford said.
