There will be a parent informational meeting for those interested in competing in this year’s Mapleton pageant(s) tonight — Wednesday, Feb. 6 — at 6 p.m. at the Mapleton Lions Hall.

Shrove Tuesday
The Mapleton United Methodist Church will be hosting its annual Shrove (Fat Tuesday) Pancake supper on Tuesday, Feb. 12 from 5-6:30 p.m. in the church dining room. Donations will be accepted.
Valentine’s Breakfast
The Mapleton Fire Department will be having a Valentine’s Breakfast fundraiser at the Mapleton Diner this Sunday, Feb. 10 from 7-11 a.m. The wait staff will be firefighters and tips received will benefit the fire department.
Planet Head Day
The seventh annual Planet Head Day will be held at the University of Maine at Presque Isle’s Wieden Hall Saturday, Feb. 16, from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. to benefit Caring Area Neighbors for Cancer Education and Recovery (C.A.N.C.E.R.). Participation can be done in a couple of ways. Individuals can volunteer to have their heads shaved and can collect financial sponsorships from friends, family, coworkers, etc. All proceeds stay in the local area to help those in treatment for cancer. Participants can also attend the festivities, wear a swim cap and have their head painted a planet of their choosing. Donations will be accepted during the day.
WAGM-TV is currently raising funds to have News Director Chris Weimer’s head shaved. Their goal is $6,000 and several WAGM TV personalities will be out in the community collecting donations. Also attending Planet Head Day from WAGM-TV will be News Anchor Shawn Cunningham and Meteorologist Ted Shapiro. More information can be found on their Facebook page.
During the event, raffle tickets will be sold for 100 gallons of fuel oil. Tickets are $1 each, six for $5, or 12 for $10 and can be purchased from a C.A.N.C.E.R. board member or during the day. The drawing will be held at 1:30 p.m.
Pizza Hut restaurants will once again be providing free pizza! The managers from Presque Isle and Houlton will be having their heads shaved for the cause and the manager from Caribou will put on a cap to have her head painted, as well.
Clukey’s Auto Supply has donated a popcorn machine and supplies to use for the day to help raise more funds for the organization.

Dean’s List
Monica Hanning of Mapleton has been named to the Dean’s List at Paul Smith’s College for the fall 2012 semester. Hanning, who majors in hotel, resort and tourism management, earned a semester average of 3.3 or higher to receive this distinction. Monica is the daughter of Steve and Beth Hanning.
The following students from Mapleton and Chapman have been named to the Dean’s List at Husson University for the fall 2012 semester: Sarah McEachern, Jessica Dumais, Chase Guerrette and Kathryn Sharp. To be named to the Dean’s List, you must earn a 3.4 or better grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
