UMPI men defeat SUNY-Canton,
women drop two home contests
PRESQUE ISLE — The Owl basketball teams continued their stretch of home contests, with the men coasting to a victory over SUNY-Canton and the women dropping a pair of games.
The UMPI men are now 9-10 on the season after Saturday’s 96-73 win.
Aaron Hutchins and Michael Warner combined to go nine for 13 from three-point land and tallied 23 and 20 points, respectively, for the Owls.
Patrick Manifold added 15 points and seven rebounds for the winners.
The Owl women’s record fell to 5-12 following losses to SUNY-Canton (63-55) and Maine Maritime Academy (77-41) over the weekend.
On Saturday, Doni Yendriga posted 16 points, while Amanda Hotham and Emily Pelletier netted 13 and 12, respectively, but the Owls still fell to the Roos.
The following afternoon, UMPI had no answer for MMA’s one-two punch of Mary Badeen and Rebekah Campbell. Badeen scored 26 points and the 6-foot-4 Campbell added 17 more in the easy win.
Olivia McNally was the lone Owl player to reach double figures, notching 10 points.
Both UMPI teams are back in action today with games at UM-Machias. Game times are 5:30 p.m. for the women and 7:30 p.m. for the men.
The squads will then return to Wieden Gymnasium to square off against Fisher College on Super Bowl Sunday. The women’s game tips off at noon and the men at 2 p.m.
