With the snowmobile season now in full swing, it’s a great time to support one of our local snowmobile clubs by attending club events. The Portage Lakers Snowmobile Club (PLSC) will be hosting its 12th annual Radar Runs Sunday, Jan. 20 in Portage Lake (on the ice) in front of the Forestry Building.
Registration is at 9 a.m. and racing begins at 10 a.m. The cost to race is $5 per run and admission is $5 per person. Riders must be 16 years of age or older to participate in all classes except for the mini class. All riders under the age of 18 must have a parent on site during their run(s).
This exciting annual event not only offers something fun to do on a Sunday, but the competition is getting fierce! Racers from all over the county and beyond come to the lake to test themselves, compete with fellow riders and one-up their friends. There are 20 different class categories from vintage and stock classes to mini and modified. It’s thrilling to watch the riders push their need for speed to the limit across the ice.
Bundle up and spend the day in Portage Lake. The Soucy family will be selling food and beverages to raise funds toward the 2014 World Acadian Congress Dubois Family Reunion and Ashland Project Grad will be selling 50/50 raffle tickets. Dean’s Restaurant will be open offering their full breakfast, lunch and dinner menu along with assorted beverage and cocktail selections. Coffin’s General Store will also be open to help warm you up with lunch specials, deli menu items, snacks and drinks. The gas pumps will also be open to keep your fuel tank topped off. An award ceremony will be held at Dean’s Motor Lodge immediately following the runs.
Mark your calendars for the always fun and entertaining PLSC Pie Auction scheduled to be held Saturday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. at Dean’s Motor Lodge. There will be lots and lots of yummy goodies up for bid. The club will also draw the winner of the Club 100. The club is selling 100 tickets for $20 each and will award one $500 winner and five $100 winners. These are some hefty cash prizes for a small contribution. The best thing is, by purchasing a ticket, you’re supporting the snowmobile club’s fundraiser which, in turn, is actually benefiting yourself and all who use the snowmobile trails! Keep in mind, all of the money raised through their fund-raising efforts, goes directly to the trail systems solely for the riders’ enjoyment! Following the auction at 9 p.m. the club will be hosting a dance (also at Dean’s) which is open to all who wish to attend.
