    The Easton Senior Days Club will be holding their first 2013 meeting on Jan. 10. There will be a pizza party at the Manor at 11:30 a.m. We will discuss the selection of new officers which will be voted on during the meeting on Jan. 24.

Easton seniors over the age of 55 are invited to attend these club meetings and bring a friend. Hope to see you there.

Drive for the animal shelter

    Easton Elementary School did a drive for the animal shelter throughout the month of December. Pictured here are items donated, along with our BEARS Club members. The BEARS Club is a group of students devoted to setting good citizenship examples and looking for ways to positively impact our school culture. Box Tops wanted

    The Easton Elementary School is holding a Box Tops Derby from now through Feb. 15. Each week the class that collects the most General Mills Box Tops wins a trophy to display in their room until the next winner is announced. The contest for individual students collecting Box Tops will continue as usual. So please send in your Box Tops for Education to the school.

 

Bear Pride magnets

    The Easton Class of 2013 Project Graduation are selling Easton Bear Pride magnets. Each magnet is $5, benefiting the Class of 2013 after-graduation adventure. If you would like to purchase a magnet, please contact the parents of an Easton High School graduate or call the Easton Elementary School at 488-7701. The Class of 2013 would greatly appreciate it.

 

Spelling Bee

    The first round of the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee will be held at the Easton Jr/Sr High School Gymnasium on Jan. 16 at 9 a.m. The winner and runner-up will then advance to the Aroostook County Spelling Bee to be held at the University of Maine at Fort Kent.

    The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the nation’s largest and longest-running educational promotion, administered on a not-for-profit basis by The E.W. Scripps Company and local spelling bee sponsors in the United States, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Department of Defense Schools in Europe; also, the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan, New Zealand and South Korea. The purpose of the bee is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, learn concepts and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. The program is open to students who have neither turned 16 nor passed beyond the eighth grade, and who attend schools that officially enrolled with the program for the current academic year.

 

National Geographic Bee

    The first round of the 2013 Geographic Bee was held at the Easton Jr./SR. High School on Jan. 8.

    For the 25th year, the National Geographic Society is holding the National Geographic Bee for students in the sixth through eighth grades in thousands of schools across the United States and in five U.S. territories, as well as in the Department of Defense dependents schools around the world. The winner of the Easton Jr./Sr. High School Bee will advance to the next level of competition, a written examination. All school winners are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $25,000 college scholarship, at the National competition in May in Washington D.C.

 

Hoop Shoot winners

    During the month of  December children in grades 3-8 competed in the Elks’ Hoop Shoot contest. The competition involved making as many foul shots as possible. The winners qualified for the regional competition. Trophies were awarded to the winners on Friday, Jan. 4, during the all-school assembly. This year’s winners were: 8-9 age group Marcus Czosnek and Eva Callioras; 10-11 age group Austin Carver and Alexis Hayes; and 12-13 qualifiers were Noah Hanscomb and Delia Bonner.

 

Swimming lessons

    Swimming lessons will begin on Jan. 9 at the Presque Isle Indoor Pool.  The cost is $17.50 ($13.75 for each additional child from the same household) for five lessons. Transportation will be provided directly after school. Please make checks payable to the Town of Easton prior to the first lesson. Open to children age 4 and up. If your child will need assistance dressing and undressing please plan to join us. Students will be assigned to classes based on their abilities.We will return to the Hall  by 4:30 p.m. Lessons will be held each Wednesday from Jan. 9 through Feb. 13 (with the exception of Jan. 30). Please be sure your child has a snack for the bus ride, a swimsuit and towel. Thanks! 

 

Little Bears’ practice

    Little Bears’ 1st and 2nd grade team will begin practices every Saturday in January starting the 12th from 9-10 a.m. All practices will be held in the elementary school gym. Please be sure your child has gym sneakers and a water bottle. We hope to have a few scrimmages and possibly play at half-time of a varsity game in February. Please sign up with the Recreation Department ASAP. 

    Little Bears’ 3rd and 4th grade team will begin practices every Saturday in January starting the 12th from 10-11:15 a.m. All practices will be held in the elementary school gym. Please be sure your child has gym sneakers and a water bottle. We will play Mars Hill at home on Jan. 15 a 3 p.m. and in Mars Hill on the 29th at 3:15 p.m. Contact the Rec if your child is going to play!

 

Zumbatomic

    Zumbatomic classes  are rockin’, high-energy fitness parties packed with specially choreographed, kid-friendly routines and all the music kids love — like hip-hop, reggaeton, cumbia and more. Parents love Zumbatomic because of the effects it has on kids, increasing their focus and self-confidence, boosting metabolism and enhancing coordination. Classes began on Thursday, Jan. 3, and run until 4 p.m. through the last Thursday of the month at the Hall. Children must have a note to ride the bus from school to the Hall. Payments of $10 can be sent with children or dropped off at the Town Office and should be received by no later than Jan. 10.

 

Rec calendar

    Wednesday, Jan. 9 — Junior Activities at the Hall from 9:30-11 a.m.

    First swim lesson at the Presque Isle pool. Transportation will depart directly after school from the elementary school and return to the Hall by 4:30 p.m. The cost is $17.50 and pre-registration is required. Open to ages 4 and up. 

    Thursday, Jan. 10 — Zumbatomic at the Hall after school until 4 p.m. Pre-registration preferred. Open to ages 4 and up.

    Friday, Jan. 11 — Junior Activities at the Hall from 9:30-11 a. m. 

    Senior Game Day at the Hall starting at 11:15 a.m. Please bring a bag lunch.

    Little Bears’ cheerleading practice after school from 2:45 to 4 p.m. at the elementary school. Open to grades 1 and up.

    Saturday, Jan. 12 — Grade 1 and 2 Little Bears’ first practice from 9-10 a.m. in the elementary school gym.

    Third and fourth grade Little Bears’ basketball practice from 10-11:15 a.m.

    First 5 and 6 grade girls’ practice from 11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the elementary gym.

    Boys’ grades five and six practice from 12:30 to 1:45  p.m. at Easton Elementary School.

    Monday, Jan. 14 — Adults “Eat Smart” at 11 a.m. in the Manor Rec Room. The cost is $3 for lunch.

    “Warm Me Up” foods after school at the Hall for grades 1 and up. Chris Finnemore from the Cooperative Extension will be running the program. Children should be picked up by 4:15 p.m.

    Tuesday, Jan. 15 — Third and fourth grade basketball team vs. Mars Hill at 3 p.m. at Easton Elementary.
