‘Lunch and Learn’
to feature innovative surgical talk
PRESQUE ISLE — A local surgeon is sharing his knowledge of a new surgical procedure for hemorrhoids, which will affect thousands of people in Aroostook County alone.

TAMC SURGEON Anuj Kandel, MD, left, and operating room manager Mallory Mckeil, RN, consult about a patient scheduled to have a transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization (THD) procedure. Dr. Kandel will be speaking about the new surgical treatment during January’s Healthy Aging luncheon Monday, Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center.
Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization (THD) is less invasive than traditional surgery and boasts quicker recovery times for patients. This innovative procedure is being offered at The Aroostook Medical Center by Dr. Anuj Kandel, MD.
Dr. Kandel will be speaking about THD during January’s Healthy Aging luncheon Monday, Jan. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Presque Isle Inn and Convention Center. The Healthy Aging luncheon is held monthly for TAMC Senior Connection members. Due to the unique nature of this month’s topic, officials felt it would be best to invite everyone in the general public to attend.
THD uses Doppler-guided technology that does not require any cutting of tissue. Doppler is a technique of using sound waves to measure blood flow. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and patients usually go home shortly after the procedure. Recovery time requires only about four days.
“Patients will have significantly shorter recovery time and less pain with THD than with traditional surgery,” said Kandel, a general surgeon specializing in colon rectal surgery. “This is the preferred treatment for patients that need surgery to treat internal hemorrhoids.”
“This new procedure is a great benefit to patients needing this type of treatment,” said Mallory Mckeil, RN, operating room manager. “Dr. Kandel has provided this procedure to patients from as far away as New Hampshire since joining TAMC last year.”
Dr. Kandel earned his medical degree from Manipal College of Medical Sciences in Nepal, and completed his residencies at North Shore University Hospital in New York in 2011 before completing a fellowship in colon and rectal surgery from Greater Baltimore Medical Center in Maryland. Dr. Kandel is the only physician pioneering THD in Maine.
Members of the general public interested in attending are asked to RSVP by calling TAMC Senior Connection at 768-4171. The $10 fee includes lunch along with the presentation.
