NMCC to offer ‘Codes and Loads’ training seminar

PRESQUE ISLE — Northern Maine Community College is offering a half-day training seminar for residential contractors, builders and code enforcement officers. “Codes and Loads” will provide an understanding of floor and roof loads and how they can affect a structure.

Participants will be using span tables from the 2012 International Residential Code and manufacturers’ data for wood products to select joists, beams, headers and rafters. Dimension and engineered lumber products will be discussed. The course will be taught by Pam Buck, P.E., chair of the NMCC trade and technical occupations department. Buck has taught computer-aided drafting courses at the college for a number of years and has over 20 years of experience in building design.

“Builders and code enforcement officials will get some more experience determining load conditions, using the building code and selecting various options for wood framing members. Participants will have the opportunity to use some online calculators for dimension and engineered lumber,” said Buck. “We can also look at some specific design issues that builders may be facing on their current or future projects.”

The course is being offered Wednesday, Dec. 5 from 8:30 a.m.-noon. The cost is $59, and participants are asked to bring a copy of the 2012 International Residential Code. For more information or to register, call NMCC’s continuing education division at 768-2849.
