Greenlaw speaks at Probus meeting
The Probus Club of Aroostook welcomed guests Ron and Georgette Beaulieu, Dana Crory, Debra Lovlett and Rod Lamoreau at their Nov. 15 meeting.
Program chairman Dave Maxcy introduced the speaker, Ben Greenlaw. who is assistant principal at Presque Isle High School. He and his family moved to Presque Isle from Hampden, where he was employed at Hampden Academy.
Greenlaw spoke of the following issues and trends in education: use of the internet in the transition from industrial age to integrated learning, challenges of No Child Left Behind, charter schools, ed tech supports, teacher evaluations, student test scores, the effect of enrollment decreases on educational programs and services, property values, state funding and free lunch program.
He had praise for Presque Isle’s community spirit and its schools. Following his talk, Greenlaw answered questions and received thanks from Probus members.
After a break, President Jane McEwen called the business meeting to order. Pearl Carmichael gave a humorous reading. The secretary’s report given by Helen McConnell and the treasurer’s report by Gerry Gallagher were accepted. Richard Barker explained the scholarship given each year by the club.
The next meeting will be at 10:30 a.m. on Dec. 13. Prior to lunch, Dan Ladner will lead the group in singing Christmas carols.
