Event planned

to reinforce adoption importance

PRESQUE ISLE — Families who are interested in foster care or adoption, currently in the process of fostering or adopting, and all past and present foster parents are invited to an event in recognition of National Adoption Awareness Month. The event will be held Saturday, Nov. 17 from 2-4 p.m. at the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

A panel of foster and adoptive parents, as well as youth/young adults who have been adopted, will be on hand to answers questions and share their experiences. A representative from Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine, as well as Maine Department of Health and Human Services district staff, will also be able to answer questions.

There will be plenty of supervised activities for children, along with refreshments and special presentations in recognition of adoptive parents.

Each year, November is recognized as National Adoption Awareness Month, with the focus on adoption of children in foster care. In Maine, 365 children are still waiting for an adoptive home. The Aroostook County Maine Adoption Awareness Month Committee has planned this event to highlight the need for families for those children who have yet to find legal permanency through adoption.

First Lady Ann LePage supports National Adoption Awareness Month, as well. Last week, the Adoptive and Foster Families of Maine, Inc. and Adoption Awareness Committee hosted an event at the Blaine House which honored LePage for the time and caring she has provided to the adoptive families during her tenure as First Lady.

Those interested in attending Saturday’s event should RSVP to Ann Stephenson, DHHS Caribou Office, at 493-4000. Anyone who cannot attend but would like to learn more about foster care or adoption should call 532-5000 or 493-4000.

This event is being held by DHHS’ Office of Child and Family Services in conjunction with the University of Maine at Presque Isle Social Work Program.
