WASHBURN — The Washburn Fire & Rescue Department has developed a new smoke detector program for the residents of Washburn.
The program will allow individuals in need of smoke detectors in their homes to pick up an application at the Washburn Town Office. After reviewing the application, fire officials will arrange to inspect the property and, if approved, install the smoke detector for the homeowner.
“This was the work of my Assistant Fire Chief Nate Allen, who came up with the idea, presented it, applied for the grant through the Aroostook County Fire Chief’s Association, and received 50 smoke detectors to start the program,” said Fire Chief Troy Heald.
“The program’s goal is to get smoke detectors in homes that do not currently have them because the homeowner may not be able to afford them on their own,” he said. “Our goal as a fire department is to not only put out fires and save property, but also to protect the lives of people. This is one area where we recognize a need in our community, and this is a way we can contribute.”
The department will continue to look to secure funding for this program and continue it as long as the need exists. Those interested in applying for the free smoke detectors should stop by the Washburn Town Office at 1287 Main St. Monday-Thursday from 7 a.m.-4 p.m. (closed 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. for lunch) and Friday from 7 a.m.-noon.
