HERE’S YOUR SIGN — The Chapman Ridge Runners surprised charter members Susan and Mickey Maynard with a trail sign made in their honor. The couple has been dedicated members since the club’s inception in 1981. Mickey is the current club president and Susan is the current secretary. The sign was made with donations from club members and designed by Mark Brown. Pictured are, from left: Guy Jackson (behind the sign), Susan Maynard, Mickey Maynard and Terry Hanlon.
The Maynards are the only original members of the club, which began in 1981. They have held leadership positions over the years and Mickey is the current president and Susan is the current secretary. They were also instrumental in initiating the building of the new clubhouse two years ago.
When speaking about the honor, Susan said, “We have to remind everyone that it takes so many hands to effectively operate a club. Many people share the load, from completing grants, organizing mailings, keeping track of the funds, signing trails, making and mounting signs, taking care of a building, taking our photos, cooking and planning and serving the suppers, fundraising, grooming in winter, doing maintenance on the equipment, keeping a fire going, the yard plowed and the grass mowed, mowing trails, cutting brush, not to mention public relations! It’s a balancing act in these tough economic times. We’re just so fortunate to have great club members and it’s nice to be appreciated.”
In the club’s history, there has only been one other trail named in someone’s honor. “Buster’s Trail” was named in honor of club member Vinal “Buster” McPherson. The “Maynard’s Trail” sign has yet to be posted, but will be located somewhere on one of the main trails, according to member Terry Hanlon. When speaking of his close friends and fellow club members, Hanlon said the couple has gone “above and beyond” when it comes to matters of the club.
Still surprised by the gesture, Susan said, “We couldn’t imagine how it happened without our knowledge! We’re very thankful and honored.”

Grange Hall news
On Oct. 30, the Castle Hill Grange Hall Preservation Society held its yearly board of directors meeting. All officers will remain the same as will the board of directors. Guy Beaulieu will replace Sherri Guerrette as a board member. Pizza and drinks were served before the meeting and ideas for fundraisers and projects for 2013 were discussed.
The society has 29 cookbooks left to sell. These would make a great birthday or Christmas gift! The annual candy bar sale will be held this winter to help cover the expenses for fuel and insurance.
The last meeting of the year will be held Nov. 27, weather permitting. Please consider joining this group. One hour a month to keep the hall functioning could go a long way. Members, ideas and donations are always needed.
